Amy’s artist statement:
I have been making my living as a potter for over 20 years. It is a functional, 3-dimensional
medium. Once I started putting my hands in clay I never looked back. It became my art form. My
professional background and education is in graphic design. Integrating those 2-d skills with my
pottery felt natural. Over time it resulted in a body of work that is uniquely my own.
In January of 2024 I had a catastrophic fall that resulted in two surgeries and a lengthy recovery
period. I was unable to work in the clay studio. My creative life was on hold. As my mobility
improved I realized I could try other forms of art that didn’t require the use of my left arm. It was
a vital component of my recovery.
Collage felt like a natural place to start. I am a self describe forager. For years I have stashed
away beautiful papers and found objects to “use later”. With lots of supplies already on hand, I
began studying collage techniques online. That led me to mono printing with acrylic paint and a
Gelli plate. Before I knew it my dining room had been converted in to a 2-D art studio.
I made my first collection of collages and mono prints that March and April of 2024. I didn’t know
where it would take me but I quickly realized it was an art form I wanted to pursue. Clay
continues to be my primary focus. Still, I can’t deny the pull I feel towards these new (to me) art
forms that brought my creative spirit back when it was at it’s lowest.
In May of 2024 I was back in the pottery studio full time. I concentrated on clay for the rest of the
year and through the winter. This spring I gave myself permission to “play” again and devoted
another block of time to collage and mono printing. The 2-D work I am featuring at the library in
August was all created between May and July of 2025. These mono prints and collages are very
much connected to the nature inspired imagery found on my clay pieces. I’ve even incorporated
clay elements with collage to create mixed media assemblage pieces. The potential of this is
very exciting and something I will pursue. Again, I’m not sure where it will take me but that’s half
the fun.
